Later his parents and Jim moved to the Historic J. H. Slaton House on South Broadway.
He attended the nearby Broadway School, where he is pictured in the 5th grade.

JIMMY SLATON LIVED AT THE J.H.SLATON HOUSE ( KY LANDMARK ) LOCATED ON SOUTH BROADWAY ONE BLOCK SOUTH OF THE D.L.FORD STORE.DURING THE EARLY 1930'S JIMMY USED TO CARRY THE KEROSENE CONTAINER FROM THE FAMILY KITCHEN STOVE TO HAVE IT REFILLED FOR TEN CENTS AT FORDS' STORE.
